My understanding is it's the patch that handles all the customization of the game. For example through it, we can turn things on and off in the game, edit tags and change the way the hud and settings work. As the developers are able to reverse engineer more of the client, I'm sure you'll see more features added to it.
But it appears to be more of a plugin API at the moment. I have a decent understanding of code and whatnot, though I haven't touched the El-Dorito source myself.
This is my best guess at what it's actually doing.
Totally impossible. There is NOT open source version of the HALO executable code and never will be, since it's in the hands of a very evil company, none other than Microsoft, who are known to fight the open source movement when they get a chance. Would it be in the hands of Bungie, the original creators of Halo, we would have an open source implementation by now, and maybe a Raspberry Pi port: look at previous Bungie games, they all have open source implementations. IMHO buying ANYTHING from Micro$oft is helping their evil empire to prevail. When you buy, you vote. Personally, I wouldn't touch ANYTHING from Microsoft with a 100mts pole.

Halo Custom Edition Free Full Version
@arwyn-bach: Halo executable code is not opensource. There is NOT Halo engine open source implementation, since it's in the evil hands of Micro$oft. I don't know/mind what that 'Halo Custom Edition' is. Some kind of map extension/hack/whatever, but the Halo executable is not opensource and never will be unless Micro$oft goes belly up (wich I truly hope). Forget it, seriously. @pygmygian: I had no sheltered life at all.
And for me it's very clear: capitalist = evil. I know most people are totally brainwhashed against alternatives. Micro$oft is a business corporation: of course there's not one-evil-man scheme. That's of course a naive point of view. But Micro$oft can be defined by it's acts, and it's acts are deliberately evil if we take them and analyze them as a whole: -They totally took over the desktop OS market with the worst ever OS I've known, running on the worst and most expensive hardware I've ever suffered: the clunky, ugly, power-inefficient and failure-prone IBM-PC sub-standard. I won't come to a full analysis here on how it came to be, but I know (and so do you) there were far better alternatives. There was no need to rule the desktop world as ong as format interoperability was followed.
It was not a case of 'survival of the fittest', it was a global abuse, and brought us to this point in history where most desktop computers use a broken OS that doesn't try to follow any standard because they just don't need to: they impose people it's propietary, broken and closed filesystems, fileformats and interface implementation (files, threads, events.everything!!).Micro$oft DOES attack alternative operating systems: they forced the european laws that forbid selling computers without a preinstalled OS. They also invade, like an evil cancer, every public administration in most european countries. Public money is destined to pay for their scumbag sub-ware everywhere in Europe because they press so hard on goverments to get there instead of the open source solutions they should morally choose.Micro$oft attacks open source software in schools: they press hard to be there to enslave children minds so they can only use their products. They create young slaves, disabled users who fear to learn how a computer works, how to work with another OS and irresponsible slaves who can't fix any code, be it small fixes to make their workflow better or bigger changes that would benefit every human around the world.Micro$oft attacks alternative operating systems from the selling points, too: I know of at least two major scumbag-PC vendors here with shops all around the country with Micro$oft awards. They control the retail so Micro$oft-free computers are rare and expensive by economically encouraging their products on new computer: they even subvention part of the final price if they know about a similar offer with other OS in the same price range, so the situation gets so ridiculous as to have Linux computers being way more expensive than the same computer with Micro$oft bloat-shit inside. This I've seen with my own eyes, as I used to work as a computer technician when I was studying, years ago. I could go on for hours, but my hate for Micro$oft is so immensely big that I really get to a point where I get too aggressive for souch a good forum.
People are getting seriously off-topic with all of this. Microsoft has no impact on the Pi of any relevance, and Since Halo Custom Edition (which was technically made byGEARBOX and not Bungie or Microsoft) is a retail product (you need a regular Halo serial to install it) NO retail software company would just give it away. And indeed, the source for CE on ANY platform is still closed. Those of you arguing that Bungie would have OS'd it should keep in mind that the only modern bungie game to have source code shared is Marathon, even Myth 2's code went to Project Magma, not true open source. ANYWAY Halo uses a lot of shader models and complex geometry that the Pi couldn't handle anyway so it's kind of a moot point. The minimum amount of memory Halo requires to run exceeds what is on the Pi in total, for instance.
Audio and networking would face similar issues. As for all the people having the unrelated argument about Microsoft: Microsoft is a business.
They produce a product to make money. As such their operating system and programs are proprietary. Linux is an open platform and generally runs open-source software. I know a lot of folks are in the 'information wants to be free' camp, but you need to consider the markets. Microsoft Makes their products for home users and businesses who would not compensate them without sales costs. Linux efforts are supported by community involvement that diffuses the burden of development work.
They are different avenues to different ends, both equally valid. It is foolish to either disregard the dynamism of Linux or the tremendous convenience afforded to general users by Windows platforms; arguing that the value of one precludes the value of another is a baseless, oversimplified strawman argument that people should just stop. You should also widen your view; there are folks who still think you are idiots for not using OS2 warp, and one really odd guy somewhere who is still convinced Solaris will make a comeback. Keep that in mind before you bash.Pathways into darkness may also be open source but it is technically a Marathon game, SO.
