So basically everybody is saying that ei.cfg removal should work, but it didn't because the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool from Microsoft doesn't ignore it. So why bother?

Simple steps: 1. Download the Ultimate iso image in your language (it has to be 32 bits for Starter) 2. Use the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to make your pendrive bootable with Windows 7 Ultimate 3. But you want the Starter Edition, right?

(or another one)? Go to your usb drive and look for the folder /sources 5. Find the ei.cfg file inside and delete it (yes - throw it out) 6. Boot from usb in your netbook 7.

Choose Install and you'll have a screen with the option to choose from whatever Windows you like!!!:) Good Luck!

When you formatted the OS partition, did you also wipe out the factory restore partition? If not, you should have no issue reinstalling using that. If you did, then you'll probably need to find somebody with installation media as Microsoft no longer provides free ISO downloads for recovery purposes to users with preinstalled OEM keys. You may be able to contact ASUS, simply tell them you had a hard drive issue and no longer have the recovery partition, and arrange replacement recovery media for a small fee. Then again, they may tell you to hit the bricks. Most any equivalent Windows 7 installation media should accept your OEM key though, not sure if your trouble is with finding a download or if your key is being rejected when you attempt to install.
